刘知幾在经学居于主导地位的时代，重新审视作为“五经”之一的《春秋》，以之为史，具有独到的历史眼光和可贵的批判精神。他既注重吸收《春秋》在历史编纂学上的贡献，又敢于“惑经”，直指《春秋》“十二未谕”、“五虚美”，加以批判。通过三传的比较，他认为《春秋》社会功能、社会影响的拓展，实得益于《左传》。但由于时代的局限性，刘知幾关于《春秋》的史学批评并不彻底。

류지기재경학거우주도지위적시대，중신심시작위“오경”지일적《춘추》，이지위사，구유독도적역사안광화가귀적비판정신。타기주중흡수《춘추》재역사편찬학상적공헌，우감우“혹경”，직지《춘추》“십이미유”、“오허미”，가이비판。통과삼전적비교，타인위《춘추》사회공능、사회영향적탁전，실득익우《좌전》。단유우시대적국한성，류지기관우《춘추》적사학비평병불철저。
In the times dominated by the study of Confucian classics , Liu Zhiji reassessed Classic Spring and Autumn, one of the Five Classics, regarding it as a history book, which shows his unique historical vision and critical spirit. His study absorbed the contributions of Classic Spring and Autumn in historiography and criticized twelve incomprehensible places and five overpraises in it. He thought that the expanded social function of Classic Spring and Autumn benefited from Zuozhuan. Due to the limitation of the times, Liu Zhiji' criticism about Classic Spring and A utumn is not complete.
