骨质疏松症分为原发性骨质疏松症和继发性骨质疏松症。传统医学理论对原发性骨质疏松症病因病机的概括以肾虚为主，而现代医学则将骨吸收和骨形成的失衡作为其基本的病理机制。传统医学治疗原发性骨质疏松症主要采用单味及复方中药治疗，现代医学治疗骨质疏松症偏向于开展联合用药方案。在骨质疏松症治疗中，淫羊藿是最常用药，但是其作用的分子机制仍不完全明了。
