清末民初，在昆剧舞台演出日趋萎缩、职业戏班或解散或加入京昆合班的背景下，苏州的散居道士却以道教法事之外兼唱昆曲的形式，活跃在苏州的各个乡镇，成为昆剧表演的重要力量。苏州宫观内的戏楼和神仙诞辰的搭台演剧也成为昆剧演出的重要舞台，这一时期重要的业余曲社———道和曲社等更是借用了苏州玄妙观的一个殿堂开展昆剧排练演出。而出身道士世家或由道教培养出来的音乐人才，也为建国后昆曲艺术的恢复发展贡献了重要力量。

In the later Qing Dynasty and the beginning of Minguo,with the declination of stage performing of Kunqü,professional companies of Kunqüwere either dismissed or merged into combined companies of Beijing Opera and Kunqü.However,the scattered Taoists in Suzhou were active in performing Kunqüin the towns and villages of the area in addition to their religious performances,becoming a major strength to perform Kunqü.The stages in the temples as well as stages temporarily set up for celebrating the birthday of immortals became the important places for performing Kunqü.The important amateur societies such as Daohe(Daoism harmony) Society took the advan-tage of the palace hall in Xuanmiao Temple to rehearse and perform Kunqü.The musical talents from aristocratic Taoism families or educated by Taoism societies contributed greatly to the revival and development of the art of Kunqüafter the foundation of the People’s Republic of China.
