禅宗经典文本的形成过程就是一部有意误读的历史过程。这是基于禅宗在中国化的进程中，面对时代的发展和人的认识差异所作的文化选择和创新。人们阅读、解读佛教经典文本话语的过程是一个不断提升自己接近佛性的自觉性过程。作为一种语言现象，误读尽管是应该尽量减少的，但历代禅师们对经典文本“误读”，如果其目的是为了将禅宗发扬光大而进行的创造性的有意误读，这种有意误读有它存在的合理性，也没必要过分地去责备它。在禅宗思想发展过程中，人们对禅宗经典文本解读过程中的有意“误读”也是禅宗思想创新的需要。
