中国艺术设计教育起源于1840年西方列强对中国全面入侵的刺激及倒逼,起源于洋务派官员“求强”活动中创办的军事学堂、实业学堂、工业学堂以及“工艺局”之类的培训学堂,起源于师范学堂、私家美术培训学校和私立美术学校。艺术设计教育最初的内容是“图画”、“工艺”或“图案”。真正将工艺、图案烙上艺术设计印记的是民国时期的美术学校。人民共和国将图案教育转变为工艺美术教育,并且特意设置了工艺美术等专门性、专业性的高校,进而将工艺美术教育扩展至工科院校。改革开放之后工艺美术教育得到了快速、全面地发展,20世纪末年真正步入艺术设计教育的宽广大道。

The art design education in China stemmed from the impact of full-scale invasion by the western countries in 1840, and it can be traced back to the various training schools funded by the Westernization Group ofifcials’ activities for competitiveness, such as military schools, vocational schools, industrial schools, and “Technology Bureaus”, it also can be dated back to the normal schools, private ifne arts training schools and ifne art schools. The initial contents of art and design education are “drawing”, “arts and crafts” and “pattern”, and did not have the real mark of art design until the period of the Republic of China. Pattern education had been developed into arts and crafts education and colleges for the specialized professional arts and crafts education had been set up by the People’s Republic of China, and then the arts and crafts education extended to the engineering college. Since late 1970s, the arts and crafts education developed rapidly and comprehensively, and stepped into the broad road of art design education in the end of the 20th century.
