In Zhang Heng's designs, there are many decorative patterns which are speciifcally featured by Chinese ancient ritual vessels and relfect symbolic semantics. With the modern semiotic theory to analyze the representative decorative patterns, such as direction symbols, dragon shaped symbols and Toad symbol, it can be found that these graphic or indicative symbols are also symbolic. Therefore, both the symbolization and meaning are significantly vital in Zhang Heng’s design because their concrete beauty just represents the worship to ceremony and the life view of heaven.
