严复学贯中西,突破华夷之辨的传统观念,反对“西学中源”说。他特别崇尚西方科学的原理精神,认为西方富强的根源在于其学术、制度与风俗;中国欲救亡图存,强国富邦,“以西学格致为不可易”,应该鼓民力、开民智、新民德;中学“最富矿藏,惟须改用新式机器发掘陶炼”,学习西学的目的旨在“归求反观”中学。

엄복학관중서,돌파화이지변적전통관념,반대“서학중원”설。타특별숭상서방과학적원리정신,인위서방부강적근원재우기학술、제도여풍속;중국욕구망도존,강국부방,“이서학격치위불가역”,응해고민력、개민지、신민덕;중학“최부광장,유수개용신식궤기발굴도련”,학습서학적목적지재“귀구반관”중학。
YAN Fu had a thorough knowledge of both western and Chinese learning, broke through in the fight against the tra-ditional idea of Sino–barbarian dichotomy, and objected to the theory of “Chinese origin of western learning”. Advocating the principle spirit in western sciences, he held that the strength of the West was rooted in scholarship, systems and tradition. Holding that saving and strengthening the country depended on science in the West, he emphasized the importance of motivating people’ s strength, developing their wisdom and renewing their morality. In his view, treasures could be found in Chinese learning, and the exploitation required the adoption of new machines. He thought the purpose of studying western learning was the reflection on Chi-nese learning.
