堡寨是我国历史上具有代表性的农村防御性建筑，具有其独特的保护和防御功能，历史上，由于甘肃武山境内战事频发，民风彪悍，加之堡寨其特殊的地理位置，具有守卫功能的堡寨更是密集，各乡镇、具有战略位置的山头、百姓集聚的村落，都有堡寨的分布，不同时期的堡寨功能略有差异，文章在分析堡寨出现区域的整体环境以及分布情况的基础上，以史书和县志记载为依托，进行比较与归类，提炼出别具一格的武山堡寨的共性与特征，总结归纳其研究和保护的价值与意义。
