<正> 葛传椝先生在《英语惯用法词典》(1962年新修订本)的forbid条中讲:“forbid的object后面接infinitive;例如:‘His health forbids him to go.’不可接‘from’和gerund;如不可说‘Hishealth forbids him from going’”这样看来,似乎forbid定要与to搭配,而不能与from,其实不然。笔者注意到,forbid与from搭配不乏其例。如:“The fourth section pronounced on the vali-dity of the public debt,and forbade any state from paying any debt incurred in rebellion,or forany of the emancipated slaees.”(Henry William Elson,History Of The United States Of Am-erica p.762 1929年出版)再如:“Church bells tolled in defiance of law,and Mexican bishops
