In 1989-1992, the Huili County Office for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments,Sichuan, and other institutions carried out four seasons of excavation to explore the Fenjiwan tombs. They revealed 150 earthen-pit burials, which are arranged densely and have an elongated rectangular pit each. The funeral objects include mainly pottery, and also bronze, stone and jade artifacts. Most of the pottery vessels bear their own features, and the burial custom differs from those in surrounding areas. These tombs represent an archaeological culture with a new aspect. Judging from the shapes of the grave goods, the tombs should be dated to the Warring States period.
