Since the publication of The Scarlet Letter by American romantic writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, many critics show different opinions about the heroine Hester PRYNNE. In fact, she is a brave woman with strong rebellion spirit, but she is not a firm rebel because of her compromise.However, it is her compromise within her bravery and rebellion that account for the influence of both romanticism and puritan ideas on the author and that is the true reflection of the conflict of his ideal and reality.
