As an evolving approach, Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) seeks to offer an unifying framework of how people (1) develop vocational interests, (2) make (and remake) occupational choices, and (3) achieve varying levels of career success and stability. This framework highlights social cognitive variables, such as self- efficacy, which enable people to exercise persoi~al agency in their own career development processes; it is also concerned with the ways in which other people and environmental factors help shape people's career paths. This article overviews the theory's basic elements, predictions, and research status, including a study of diverse populations; it also considered some of SCCT's implications for the design of developmental and counseling interventions.
