The authors study a group of knife-shaped coins of Yan State in order to determine the chemical composition and micro-chemical structure of the alloy used for coinage at that time and to gain further information about the metallurgy and the metal ores used for producing the necessary metals. The results indicate that the Yan coins have high lead content, and most of them are made of lead bronze. The minor elements and sulphides detected suggest that sulphide ores were probably added in the process of smelting copper and lead. The phenomenon of alloy stratification is caused by slow cooling in the casting process, and the rusting of the coins is mainly due to the greater corrodibility of the lead.
