Defamiliarization as an artistic technique in which the Russian formalism shows greatest interest trying to amend people＇s habitual psychological pattern in a unique way in an attempt to make people go beyond usual intuition and have a new understanding of the objects. The Old Man and the Sea is an allegorical story. The image, disguised and personified, has surpassed his concrete real attribute while the narration itself has great impact upon the readers＇ stylistic expectations. Such defamiliarization brings the readers peculiar aesthetic feelings.
