Sustainable development has gained much concern with society and academic domains, therefore it also an important issue that needs to be studied further; The ecological footprint method put forward in the late 1990s and improved by William Rees and Mathis Wackernagel presents a methodologically simple but integrated framework for national natural capital accounting, which is capable of measuring the impact of human's consumption on ecosystem. In this paper, we calculate and analyses the ecological footprint of Taiyuan in 2003. The result shows that the ecological footprint of Taiyuan is 5.621 hm^2 per capital, the available ecological capacity of Shanxi province is 0. 264 hm^2 per capital, the ecological deficit of Taiyuan is 5. 357hm^2 per capital in 2003. The ecological deficit shows that human load has already stayed beyond the regional ecological capacity greatly, and the regional natural ecosystem is under great pressure of human activities, to which human should pay sufficient attention. Then comparing Taiyuan's urban ecosystem stress degree and resource utilization efficiency with some existing achievement of other cities, it can indicate that the resource utilization efficiency in Taiyuan is relatively low , the pressure that its urban ecosystem receives is abnormally great. At last, some suggestions to alleviate this city's ecological pressure are also offered.
