Simplicity of thought is an ancient idea. It is the outcome of people's long-term understanding and creative activities. For over 2,000 years, it has been playing an important role in philosophy and aesthetics, exerting an influence on the appreciation of artistic creation. Rudolf Arnheim calls it an "Economic Aesthetic Principle".
As a creative activity, art not only creates vivid personalities, but also has extremely high generalization in theme and format. It represents maximum artistic contents with minimum elements and the most compact representations. The reason why people follow this Economic Aesthetic Principle is that it matches with the trend of human intellectual development. Most importantly, it offers more aesthetic tension to art works.
In aesthetic activities, this principle is fully embodied in the polishing of artistic contents and refining of artistic expressions. At all times and all over the world, artists have polished their artistic contents and pursued the method of "Economic Aesthetic Principle" by way of personality generalization, making extracted characters, and connotations, etc. Among them, connotation is one of the special features of Chinese art works. It is exactly "Economic Aesthetic Principle", using limited forms to reflect infinite contents.
