由于源语与目的语以及与之相关的文化之间存在的差异，“变通”通常成为通往理想译文不可或缺的手段。文章从探讨变通的本质入手，进而分析了变通的理据以及变通的原则，认为翻译变通不可随意为之，必须基于语用推理，语用推理可以确保原文深层意义的延传。判断变通手段得体与否要依据使用该变通手段所产出的译文是否忠实准确，以及它所服务的读者对象是否乐于接受而定：

유우원어여목적어이급여지상관적문화지간존재적차이，“변통”통상성위통왕이상역문불가혹결적수단。문장종탐토변통적본질입수，진이분석료변통적리거이급변통적원칙，인위번역변통불가수의위지，필수기우어용추리，어용추리가이학보원문심층의의적연전。판단변통수단득체여부요의거사용해변통수단소산출적역문시부충실준학，이급타소복무적독자대상시부악우접수이정：
To bridge up the differences between the source and target, language and culture, adaptations at various levels are often resorted to in translation. The author of this paper makes a tentative study of the nature and the basis of adaptations as well as principles observed by the translators in making adaptations. The author holds that the adaptations must be done cautiously on the basis of pragmatic inference as they can ensure accuracy in con- veying the meaning of the source text （ST）. To the author, whether an adaptation is appropriate or not depends on whether the target text （TF） it produces is accurate and acceptable to the TF readers.
