在中华传统文化中，“求知”被看成是塑造“君子”理想人格所必备的美德，因而深入地探讨了人愚智的成因，揭示了“求知”源于人生命的自由意志；探讨了人的知识智慧形成的先天素质和后天习染等问题，指明智慧与道德是形成理想人格的相辅相成的两个方面，坚持了知行统一观；在坚持社会进化论和民本思想的基础上，把“开智”与强国统一起来，提出了“民智者，富强之源”的重要理念。
재중화전통문화중，“구지”피간성시소조“군자”이상인격소필비적미덕，인이심입지탐토료인우지적성인，게시료“구지”원우인생명적자유의지；탐토료인적지식지혜형성적선천소질화후천습염등문제，지명지혜여도덕시형성이상인격적상보상성적량개방면，견지료지행통일관；재견지사회진화론화민본사상적기출상，파“개지”여강국통일기래，제출료“민지자，부강지원”적중요이념。
In Chinese traditional culture, ＂craving for knowledge＂ is regarded as the essential virtue to shape a gentleman of noble character. Therefore, this essay centers on the reasons why some people are stupid, and reveals that ＂craving for knowledge＂ originates from human＇ s free will. It also discusses the effects of inborn quality and the acquired habits on the formation of knowledge and wisdom , and points out that wisdom and morals are complementary in shaping the ideal character of human being, which insists on the unity of knowledge and behavior. On the basis of the social evolution and the idea of ＂taking the people as essence＂, ＂initiating intelligence＂ and making the country powerful are unified. The important concept, ＂people＇ s intelligence is the source of prosperous country＂ is put forward.
