新兴的申报馆在王韬的小说创作中起到了重要作用，促成了两次创作高峰，同时也是两次转变。申报馆与王韬的合作开启了报刊与中国小说作家合作的先河，意味着中国的小说创作在商业资本和近代传媒的介入中酝酿着重大转变，在小说界革命之前尝试了小说的近代变革。
신흥적신보관재왕도적소설창작중기도료중요작용，촉성료량차창작고봉，동시야시량차전변。신보관여왕도적합작개계료보간여중국소설작가합작적선하，의미착중국적소설창작재상업자본화근대전매적개입중온양착중대전변，재소설계혁명지전상시료소설적근대변혁。
WANG Tao is a major novelist in late Qing Dynasty, and he is prolific. The emerging Shen Bao plays a key role in his change of novel writing, resulting in two peaks of his writing career, namely the two changes. The first change occurs after he arrives in Hong Kong from a journey to Europe. Shen Bao invites him to contribute for the publication of a series. This inspires him a lot, and influences him in the communication with people from that newspaper; the second one happens when he settles in Shanghai. Shen Bao begins ＂Dianshizhai Pictorial＂ ,publishing in installments three of his novels. This way of publication changes the way of novel writing, influencing the stylistic structure and his mentality of writing. The cooperation between WANG Tao and Shen Bao is the first of its kind in China, signifying the great change of novel writing due to the participation of commercial capital and modem media. This is a modem reform before the revolution happening in the circle of novelists.
