The Kowloon Walled City (KWC) was built in 1846; and its wall was completely torn down by the Japanese Army in the 1940s to provide building material for expanding the Kai Tak Airport. Prior to the construction of the KWC Park, the Antiquities and Monuments Office, Hong Kong, conducted archaeological investigation at the KWC site in November 1993 to July 1994. Stonewalls, street paving granite slabs and draining ditches along with remnants of the KWC eastern and southern gates were discovered underneath the foundations of modern structures. Remarkably, two stone tablets en- graved with the Chinese characters "Kowloon Walled-City 九龙寨城 and "South Gate 南门" were unearthed together with some ceramic utensils of daily use. In view of the historical significance of the KWC, the remnants of South Gate have been preserved in-situ and, in 1996, were declared as a legally protected monument.
