多元文化教育研究的历程是我们理解复杂的多元文化教育思想、把握其流变特征的钥匙。美国多元文化教育研究大致可分为单一民族教育研究阶段、多元民族教育研究阶段和多元文化教育研究三个阶段。由于政治因素的影响,美国多元文化教育研究主要是一种辩论性的、证明性的研究。它的研究的深度和广度都是我国研究者未能达到的。因此,我国研究者应该重视来自实践的需求,并妥善处理民族性与国家性的问题。

The history of multi-cultural education study is the key to understanding complicated ideas of multi-cultural education as well as its changes and characteristics. The study on multi-cultural education in the United States went through three stages: the stage of unitary national education study, the stage of multi-national education study and the stage of multi-cultural education study. Influenced by political factors, the study on multi- cultural education in the US is mainly theoretical and empirical which is far beyond the reareh of our researchers in both depth and width. Therefore, researchers in China should attach importance to practical needs and handle problems concerning nationality and the state in appropriate ways.
