目前“新闻学”、“传播学”名称中的歧义与重名给学科研究造成了类似“二名三意”的混乱,阻滞了学科发展,迫切需要正名。针对有关学科使命与学科构成的问题,学术界形成了一系列新主张。学科的根本目标是服务人民;服务的基本方式是分工合作;传播学与基础传播学互不相等,传播学与新闻学互不平行;传播学中,研究与教学并重,相辅相成,缺一不可;教学中,理论与实践并重,同样重要;传播研究中,基础与应用并重;应用研究中,单用研究主属业界,广用研究主属学界;传播学中包括新闻学、公关学、广告学、媒体管理学、基础传播学以及其他子学科。

Guided by the theories and principles of applied semiotics, the author analyzed a spirited disagreement between a well-known "journalism" professor and a well-known "communication" professor. It was found that two Chinese words, "chuan bo xue" and "xin wen xue," were used to represent three key concepts, 1) communication research and education, which include sub-disciplines such as journalism, public relations, advertising, media management, internet communication, and basic research; 2) basic research only; 3) journalism education and journalism research. With these two signifiers (words) and three signified (concepts), there are two trios of "one signifier for two signified" and one trio of "two signifiers for one signified," leading to confusion and an identity crises about the composition and mission of the field. The author suggests adding a third term "ji chu chuan xue" to represent basic research, and reassign meanings to the other two terms so that "xin wen xue" only represents journalism education and journalism research, and "chuan bo xue" represents the entire field. Using the explicated concept and the clarified labels, the author went on to discuss the constitution and the mission of the field,, and the division of labor between profession and academia, teaching and research, skill courses and theory courses, applied research and basic, research, generally applied research and singularly applied research, and among various sub-disciplines of mass communication.
