本文在比较麦尔维尔的两部作品《泰彼》和《贝尼托·塞莱诺》的共同点的基础上,指出在解读《泰彼》时应给予泰彼山谷土著人更多的重视。在主人公兼叙述者托莫和泰彼人的接触中,托莫获得了一些观察泰彼人生存环境和社会特色的权力,但他的权力是有限的,是由泰彼人界定的,在托莫窥测泰彼人的同时,泰彼人也在利用他的观察。泰彼人将托莫扣留了四个月,努力改变托莫,欲使其变成彻头彻尾的当地人。在西方文明和原始文化的接触中,托莫表面上表现出自信、优越,然而内心却对异族力量怀着深深的恐惧、焦虑,这一内外的不一致解释了为什么托莫在对泰彼大唱赞歌的同时却千方百计地逃离泰彼。

Through a comparative study of Melville's Typee and Benito Cereno, the present paper argues that we should attach more importance to the Typee natives while reading Typee. Tommo, the protagonist and narrator of Typee, is detained in Typee for four months. During his stay, he snatches every opportunity to watch or peep at the natives and makes seemingly well-grounded observations about their life, customs, and social institutions. However, what he can see is decided by the natives, who are not passively awaiting the gaze of Tommo, the white, civilized outsider but are manipulating his peep in their interest. Moreover, the Typee natives relentlessly try to convert and transform Tommo into a Typeean. Aware of the power of the natives, Tommo exhibits in his narrative a sustained fear and anxiety, which greatly undermines his confidence and sense of superiority. Hopefully, this may shed new light on why Tommo persistently tries to escape from Typee while at the same time singing its praises
