台湾民间体育组织的缘起,是与当地庙宇活动密切联系的,即与佛教、道教活动相互结合.组织的名称多以社、堂、团、馆为主,表现为综合性的民众团体.每当庙宇进行各种祭祀、庆祝等活动时,民俗体育就成了不可缺少的重要表演活动.台湾民间体育组织活动又随社会的变迁而表现出不同的功能,由娱神娱人功能到防卫与军事功能,再到文化抵抗功能,又回归娱神娱人功能,并向健康的娱乐观光功能和健身功能以及中华传统体育文化教育功能发展,促进两岸民间体育交流.

The origin of folk sports organizations in Taiwan is closely related to the activities of local temples, i.e. mutual combination of Buddhist and Taoist activities.The organizations are mainly named as a society, hall, association or museum, and presented as a comprehensive civilian group. Whenever local temples perform such activities as sacrificial ritual and celebration, folk sports become an indispensable important performance. The activities of folk sports organizations in Taiwan show different function as the society transforms, developing from the spirit and human being entertaining function, to the defending and military function, and the culture resisting function, and then back to the spirit and human being entertaining function, and to the healthy and entertaining sightseeing function and fitness function as well as sports culture education function, and boosting folk sports communication between Fujian and Taiwan.
