1970-2000年的数十年间，西欧与北美的正规文学研究被诸多后结构主义文学理论的传播所主宰，以至于往往把经典文本从课程设置中排挤出去。这些理论尽管能带来某些启示，但若追求过头，则产生了把对文本内在价值的判断边缘化的后果——首当其冲的就是真与美的问题。其影响在学生而言就是使他们转而对其他学科感兴趣，而对许多学者和教师而言就是文学研究失去了令人信服的理由。本文的论点就是，现在该把文学研究重置于社会语境中，重新承认文学巨著具有使人产生追求真理意志的传统作用，从而恢复文学研究学科的权威。

In the decades between 1970 and 2000, formal literary studies in Western Europe and North America were dominated by the promulgation of various types of post-structuralist literary theory, often to a degree which crowded primary texts themselves out of the curriculum. Although illuminating in some ways, when pursued obsessively these preoccupations have had the effect of marginalizing literary judgment about the intrinsic worth of texts-matters of truth and beauty perhaps chiefly among them. The effect upon students has often been to turn their interest toward other disciplines; the effect upon many scholars and teachers has been a loss of compelling justification for the place of literary study. The argument of this article is that it is time to relocate literary study in the context of community, to acknowledge again the traditional role of great literature in enabling the will to truth, and in this way to restore authority to the discipline of literary study.
