由于清廷禁教政策、朝野的华夷观与民众对基督教普遍冷漠，早期来华新教传教士在华宣教举步维艰。他们在探索对华传教方法的过程中，认知教育活动能有助于推进传教事业。其教育活动始于南洋英华书院，后经马礼逊学校十多年成功运作，逐渐形成以西式教育模式“改造中国”的基本思路，开创了在华教会教育的历史，并在客观上推动了中国传统教育的变革。

Due to the prohibition of religious preaching by Qing Dynasty, superiority to foreigners and indifference to Christianity by Chinese people, the early Protestants to China proved to be almost fruitless. In their effort of probing the ways of preaching, they came to realize that education could help pave the way for Christianity. Their educational activity started in Anglo-Chinese College in Southeast China. And after the successful handling of Morrison Education School, they gradually formed the idea of remolding China by Western education mode, which created the history of church education in China and helped push forward the reformation of Chinese traditional education.
