吴汝纶是晚清桐城派的末代宗师，虽恪守古文道统，思想却倾向洋务和维新，力倡西学，积极传播进化论思想。严复曾留学英伦，接受西式教育，但擅长以桐城古文译介西学，是中国近代最具影响力的启蒙思想家。尽管吴汝纶与严复的师承关系以及受教育的经历有较大差异，但他们却有着颇为相似的社会思想与学术观念：信奉进化史观，并恪守古文道统。
吳汝綸是晚清桐城派的末代宗師，雖恪守古文道統，思想卻傾嚮洋務和維新，力倡西學，積極傳播進化論思想。嚴複曾留學英倫，接受西式教育，但擅長以桐城古文譯介西學，是中國近代最具影響力的啟矇思想傢。儘管吳汝綸與嚴複的師承關繫以及受教育的經歷有較大差異，但他們卻有著頗為相似的社會思想與學術觀唸：信奉進化史觀，併恪守古文道統。
오여륜시만청동성파적말대종사，수각수고문도통，사상각경향양무화유신，력창서학，적겁전파진화론사상。엄복증류학영륜，접수서식교육，단천장이동성고문역개서학，시중국근대최구영향력적계몽사상가。진관오여륜여엄복적사승관계이급수교육적경력유교대차이，단타문각유착파위상사적사회사상여학술관념：신봉진화사관，병각수고문도통。
Wu Rulun is the master of the last generation of the Tongcheng School in the Late Qing Dynasty. Though he strictly follows Confucian orthodoxy of ancient Chinese prose, his thought is inclined to westernization movement and reform, and he forcefully initiates the Western learning and positively transmits the thought of evolution. Yan Fu, who once studies in Britain, receives the Western education and is good at translating the Western learning by using ancient Chinese prose, is the most impressive enlightenment thinker of modern times in China. Despite the inheriting relationship between Wu Rulun and Yan Fu, and their different education experiences, they have quite similar social thoughts and academic viewpoints： believing in the view on evolutional history, and strictly abiding by Confucian orthodoxy of ancient Chinese prose.
