一般来说，生态学是自然学科，而美学则是人文学科。由于这两门学科性质上的不同，就导致了由生态学与美学相结合而产生的生态美学学科性质的不确定性及两者之间的不可通约性。生态美学既不能解决美学本身存在的问题，又不能为现实生态问题的解决提供某种行之有效的途径，反而将美学置于一种与自身基本特性相矛盾的尴尬境地。生态美学只能是一门有学无美的致用之学。

Generally speaking, ecology is a physical and natural science, while aesthetics is a humane study of spirituality. Since two sciences have different qualities, the quality of ecological aesthetics is uncertain and the passage between ecology and aesthetics could not be found. Neither could ecological aesthetics answer the questions existing in the aesthetics, nor provide an effective way to solve realistic ecological problem. In addition, it put aesthetics into a predicament which is the opposite of its basic characteristics. Therefore, ecological aesthetics is only an applied science without the quality of aesthetics.
