儒教作为国教随着皇朝的覆灭而崩溃,儒教宗教化的努力在共和建立后终归失败。但儒家精神未灭,儒教在未来有可能或许也有必要建设成为公教——公共之教(public teaching)或公民宗教(civil religion)。公教的建立需要避免三个歧途(第六大宗教、独大宗教或伪宗教),需要发扬其超验之意志天的观念,需要发扬华夏一贯的兼容精神。基督教已经成为中国人中最主要的宗教之一,拥有独特而重要的理念资源和制度资源。理念上使得传统文化的创造性转化成为可能,制度上有助于儒家理念的传承延续,其与社会的张力程度又颇合中庸之道。

Confucianism as a kind of state religion collapsed along with the fall of the Imperial Qing Dynasty. All the attempts to make Confucianism a religion ended up in failure after the establishment of the Republic of China. However, the spirit of Confucianism is still alive. In the future, it is perhaps possible and necessary to construct Confucianism into a public teaching or civil religion. But this endeavor must avoid three wrong paths-recognizing it as the sixth religion, making it the state religion, or constructing a pseudo religion. Instead, efforts should be made to develop its notion of the transcendental Tian and to affirm the inclusive spirit in the history of China. Christianity has become a major religion among the Chinese, and it has important ideal and institutional resources. Its ideals enable creative transformations of traditional culture, its institution makes it possible to pass on Confucian ideals, and its tension with society accords with a mean course.
