This paper proposes that both the reported speech marker di^34 and the reported evidential marker di^34 in Nuosu Yi are developed from the lexical verb ＂say＂, and the grammaticalization process is triggered by argument structure change motivated by the force of strcutural simplification. Issues related to the unique VO and OV word orders in Yi are also addressed which are shown to be interwined with the grammaticalization of di^34.
