现代人直接面对现代性问题：价值统一的失落。马克斯·韦伯在逝世前的两次演讲中重提现代性。现代性问题是启蒙运动以来人的理智化过度发达的结果。理智化发展出了现代科学，科学不关涉人的内在信仰，导致价值领域的“诸神之争”；理智化使欲望在政治领域得以正当化，导致人的欲望放纵。最终，两者都指向了现代性的本质——虚无。韦伯以“责任伦理”来应对现代性，把命运交到每个个体手里，让每个人自己承担价值分裂的痛苦。

Modernists is suffering from the issue of modernity ： the loss of value unity. Max Weber before his passing away addressed two speeches, and reaffirmed modernity. Modernity resulted from man＇s over - developed intellect since the Enlightenment Movement. Modem science developed from intellectualized process is not involved in man＇s belief, which led to the ＂competition amongst gods＂ ; Intellectualized thoughts made man desire legal and just in the field of politics, and indulged it. Eventually, both of them exposed the nature of modernity vanity. Weber coped with issues of modernity by ＂responsible ethics＂, gave individual the right to conquer their fate, and everyone had to burden the pain from value divorce.
