王夫之对竟陵派进行了最严厉的批判,对他们几乎是全面否定。批判他们直承七子派的王、李,而不是公安派;标举性灵,而实际上根本不是性灵;批评竟陵派的诗学主张“幽情单绪”,并认为他们的诗是“亡国之音”。王夫之厉批、痛诋竟陵派与其宣泄亡国耻辱和力挽大雅的诗学传统取向有关。

Wang Fuzhi made sharp comments on the Jingling school and almost disagree with them. He commented that they inherited the Seven-scholar School but not the Gong'an school. He commented that they asserted natural inspiration; in faet they were not natural inspiration at all. He also criticized their "exquisite feeling" poetry opinion and thought they were the sign of nation's subversion. These remarks are related with Wang Fuzhi's playing out shame of nation's subversion and saving his elegance poetry tradition.
