The achievements of Chinese grammar research in Britain in the first half of 19th century greatly exceeded those of the previous westerners＇ in a lot of respects and can hardly be matched by those of contemporary Chinese linguists. In addition, they are still of much enlightenments to the present research on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and Chinese grammar. There are three outstanding characteristics in terms of research objective, method and content.
