古代帝王陵寝建设宣称薄葬实则厚葬者不乏其人，从而构成中国历史上一种独特的文化现象。造成这一文化现象的动因是多方面的，有政治上安抚百姓、维护统治的需要，有经济上阻止社会财富流失的企图，有心理上息盗奸之心和除暴尸之虞的忧虑。这一独特文化现象也反映了古代儒家慎终追远的孝道观念和灵魂不灭的鬼神信仰，反映了古代道教“长生久视”和佛教轮回报应的宗教观念。
고대제왕릉침건설선칭박장실칙후장자불핍기인，종이구성중국역사상일충독특적문화현상。조성저일문화현상적동인시다방면적，유정치상안무백성、유호통치적수요，유경제상조지사회재부류실적기도，유심리상식도간지심화제폭시지우적우필。저일독특문화현상야반영료고대유가신종추원적효도관념화령혼불멸적귀신신앙，반영료고대도교“장생구시”화불교륜회보응적종교관념。
In ancient China there were quite many emperors who advocated simple burial, which constructed a unique cultural phenomenon. The moves that made such phenomenon were many, such as in politics, for appeasing the people to meet the need of rule; in economy, the attempt to prevent the drain of social wealth; and in phenomenon, to prevent the treasure and the body in the mausole- um from being stolen and exposed. This unique culture reflects the filial idea of Confucian, the belief of conservation of soul, the idea of ~rowing to living forever＇of Taoism and the idea of the soul round repaying of Buddhism.
