《听夕闲谈》是我国近代翻译文学史上由国人翻译的第一部外国长篇小说译作，其译者蠡勺居士的真实身份，一百多年来一直是我国译学界和文学界的一个谜团。根据19世纪末期上海地区出版的报刊杂志以及蠡勺居士当时的科举档案，可以发掘出蠡勺居士的社会地位、功名职业和真实姓名等情况。
《은석한담》시아국근대번역문학사상유국인번역적제일부외국장편소설역작，기역자려작거사적진실신빈，일백다년래일직시아국역학계화문학계적일개미단。근거19세기말기상해지구출판적보간잡지이급려작거사당시적과거당안，가이발굴출려작거사적사회지위、공명직업화진실성명등정황。
Modem Chinese literary circle has often been bewildered by the identity of Lishaojushi, a pen name used by the first Chinese translator of Lytton＇ s Night and Morning in the late Qing dynasty of China. This paper, with the aid of Chi- nese newspaper and writings at the end of the 19th century, attempts to explore such information of the translator as his birthplace, education, profession, and social status, correcting some typical errors of other relevant articles.
