wisdom; knowledge; "Knowledge makes wisdom" ; transforming knowledge into wisdom

As is evidenced by the philological findings and the relevant quotations from the ancient scholars, the traditional Chinese culture is found to entail such a notion of wisdom as "knowledge makes wisdom", which is characterized not only by an appropriate perspective for defining wisdom but also by an implication of the thoughts of "transforming knowledge into wisdom". This notion of wisdom, however, is defective in the following three aspects: it can lead to such a misunderstanding that profound knowledge means wisdom; it ignores the essential difference between the individual's cognitive process of solving simple problems and that of solving complicated problems; and it tends to mislead people into thinking that wisdom is only a cognitive capacity. But wisdom is actually an integration of the true and the good; "the intelligence", a pure cognitive capacity, only belongs to the category of the true, which can be used to help people not only achieve the good but commit the evil as well. Therefore, without the guidance and promotion of the sense of the good, the "intelligence", only used to pursue personal interests, amounts to nothing but a kind of "astuteness".
