张恨水的散文代表作《山窗小品》自出版以来长期受到批评家的忽略，在现代文学史上的地位并不明显：《山窗小品》给评论家最大的难题是它以文言语体写成，有别于现代作家所惯用的白话语体。张恨水所使用的是一种浅易文言，接近白话文，能使作品在遣词造句上更有灵活性，加强写号的真实感及抒情的生动性。张恨水在《山窗小品》中塑造一种冲淡的风格，显示他如何继承传统文学，其艺术风格值得批评家予以重新评价。

Overlooked by most critics for decades, Zhang Henshui＇s Essays Completed under the Window with a Mountain View has not secured its place in modem Chinese literary history. This collection of essays has posed a dilemma to critics since it was written in classical Chinese, a style in contradiction with the vernacular style practiced by most modem writers. In fact, Zhang employed a ＂simple classical＂ style which is plain and elucidating, nearer to the vernacular form. This simple classical style brings more flexibility to phrasing, as well as vividness in description and liveliness in expressing emotions. A style of placidity is created, which links up Zhang＇s work with traditional Chinese literature, crucial in his artistic attainment in prose. Essays Completed under the Window with a Mountain View has shown an artistry which critics need to re-evaluate with a broader prospective.
