Whether the use of captions in audiovisual materials can improve learners' listening or not is still in dispute among EFL teachers. Skeptics are openly hostile to captioning, for it encourages them to rely on the on-screen text, taking their attention away from actual spoken language, and even fostering laziness. Being editable at instructors' pleasure, the flexible captions in SRT format, if designed and utilized skillfully, can effectively head off students' tendency to depend on the on-screen text and thus become a powerful aid in listening teaching and training.
