Eulogy as an epideictic genre in Western classical rhetoric fulfills the social function of immortalizing the dead by consigning them to a symbolic category. Such categorization, in Derrida＇s view, deprives the deceased of their individuality and pronounces their second death. In his eulogy of Roland Barthes, Derrida challenges the symbolic and structural demand of panegyric rhetoric. However, despite his rigorous attempt to break through the prison house of language, Derrida leaves behind him visible ＂traces＂ of a rhetorical exercise.
