福清市东张镇少林村的少林寺就是历史上记载的福建少林寺。该寺起置年代最迟在唐文宗（837年）之前，毁于明中叶（1489年）之前，与河南嵩山少林寺有着渊源关系。该寺所在地新宁里，在不同历史时期曾隶属过泉州、莆田、福清管辖，所以前人研究中提出的泉州、莆田、福清有少林寺的说法，也都是可以成立的。
