A book review article is basically a critical analysis of one book,which intends to present a reassessment of the book's specific topics in the context of the debate surrounding the issue:a debate that the reviewer constructs not only with the reviewed author but also within the disciplinary area. Within the academic context,the review plays a crucial role in the process of knowledge dissemination and evaluation of others' research,while providing an alternative forum in which academics can set out their views. Knowledge of the rhetorical structure and authorial stance together with the linguistic realization is therefore important to readers. Based on 30 book review articles from six applied linguistic journals,the present study is to document some of the linguistic resources used to construct argumentative evaluation in such genre. The results show the major argumentative rhetorical structures used in the evaluation. The detailed analysis of some frequently used reporting verbs indicates the specific roles or functions they play in the realization of this rhetorical structure. The findings of the study have some pedagogical implications for the academic writing course for graduate students,especially students from non-English speaking backgrounds,and more importantly it contributes to the process of better understanding of communication in the academic world.
