Metonymies can be classified within different perspectives, such as those of semiotic ontology, conceptual configuration, and domain. Within the perspective of semiotic ontology, metonymies can be classified according to the relationships between things, concepts and forms. Conceptual configurations provide us with metaphorical relationships among various concepts. The domain in which metonymical processes cover varies in number. Metonymies may even occur in a larger space of conceptual blending. However, to adequately account for the cognitive processes of metonymies, it is necessary to study the relationship between Idealized Cognitive Model and metonymical processes.
