文质概念是我国传统思想智慧的结晶，是文章学和翻译理论的基石。“文质之争”是佛经翻译的一条主线，可是由于年代久远和概念上的几次演变，常被后人误解为西方的意译和直译之争。本论文倡导回归历史，从头说起，自文质概念的出处开始溯源，追踪其演变历程，厘定文质内涵，辨析文与意译、质与直译的异同。

The concepts Wen and Zhi are the wisdom of Chinese traditional thought. They are the cornerstone of article studies and translation theories. The dispute between Wen and Zhi is the theme of Buddhist Scriptural translation, but due to the long history and long evolution, it is constantly misunderstood by later generations as sense for sense translation and word for word translation of the West. This thesis advocates returning to history, talking from the beginning,tracing to the source of the Concepts Wen and Zhi, following the trail of its evolution, defining its connotation and analyzing the similarities and differences between Wen and sense for sense translation, Zhi and word for word translation.
