Core vocabulary,essential to foreign language learners,are those common words that are universal among all nationalities.Core vocabulary can be used to define other words,with other characteristics as wide collocation,rich extended meaning and neutral in terms of cultural and mood. Textbook writers should increase the occurrence of core vocabulary and improve the input of core vocabulary based on the understanding of the importance of the core vocabulary and of the factors that cause difficulties to Chinese learners such as extended meanings of common words,correct use of collocations and verb phrases.Meanwhile,the trend of overuse one meaning of a core word at the expense of other frequent meanings and common collocations in textbooks should be avoided.
