明末清初的方以智,在其《通雅》中大量使用音训,并力求使音义关系的研究科学化。他明确提出＂欲通古义,先通古音＂的主张,对清代训诂学产生了重要影响。

Fang Yizhi（1611-1671）,a scholar who lived during the late Ming（1368-1644）and early Qing（1644-1911）periods in China,is the author of Tong Ya（1666）,a renowned encyclopedia in Chinese history,in which he uses a great number of phonological commentaries,trying to make the phonology-semantics relations in Chinese more precise and systematic.His advocacy of the idea that ＂the understanding of ancient meanings must be preceded by that of ancient pronunciations＂ exerts significant influences upon the studies of scholium during the Qing dynasty.
