know it is no use; but keep on doing it; eastward spread of Western learning; introducing Taoism into Confucianism
《论语》14·38章，隐士称孔子“是知其不可而为之者”。朱熹等古代经师大多认为这是对孔子积极人世精神的丑化与讽刺，是笑孔子为傻瓜。而现当代学者整体热捧隐士的这句话，认为孔子的确“是知其不可而为之者”。其实这是认识的倒退，是西学东渐引发的援道入儒之风所致。
《論語》14·38章，隱士稱孔子“是知其不可而為之者”。硃熹等古代經師大多認為這是對孔子積極人世精神的醜化與諷刺，是笑孔子為傻瓜。而現噹代學者整體熱捧隱士的這句話，認為孔子的確“是知其不可而為之者”。其實這是認識的倒退，是西學東漸引髮的援道入儒之風所緻。
《론어》14·38장，은사칭공자“시지기불가이위지자”。주희등고대경사대다인위저시대공자적겁인세정신적축화여풍자，시소공자위사과。이현당대학자정체열봉은사적저구화，인위공자적학“시지기불가이위지자”。기실저시인식적도퇴，시서학동점인발적원도입유지풍소치。
According to The Analects, the hermits regarded Confucius as a ＂person who knows it is no use, but keeps on doing it＂. Some scholars of Confucian classics such as Zhu Xi thought that such a statement not only uglified and satirised Confucius＇ positive attitude to life but also treated him as an idiot. However, some scholars in modern and contemporary society are still indulge themselves in adopting this statement and deem him a real ＂person who knows it is no use, but keeps on doing it＂. This paper argues that such a phenomenon is a retrogression of understanding and the result of introducing Taoism into Confucianism in the eastward spread of Western learning.
