The opening of the Beijing - Hangzhou Grand Canal aiming at transporting grain by water to supply the capital or meet military demands has exerted a far - reaching influence on the development of China＇s politics, economy and culture. The operation of Huitong River furthered the great development of Liaocheng＇s economy and society, which brought cultural flourishing as never before. The paper analyzes Liaocheng＇s status in the Canal and the influence of it on Liaocheng＇s economy and culture based on the geographical angle of view, which has academic significance on developing canal cultural resource, promoting Liaocbeng＇s social and economic development and construction of ecological civilization.
