阎宗临是上世纪 30 年代末到 70 年代末执教于国内多所高校的资深教授。他在三、四十年代发表的论著中,＂以人为本＂论文化,把中世纪看做是＂欧洲文化的转型期＂,文艺复兴是由 13 世纪文化蜕变出来的;近代欧洲的＂机械文化＂使＂价值颠倒,人为物役,心为形役＂;在法文版的博士论文中,他深入探讨了＂中学西渐＂的问题;凸显出独具特色的文化史观和一位史学大家的远见卓识。他矢志求学,博学多才,为人谦和,热爱祖国,是一位本该属于大师级的学者。

Yan Zonglin was a senior professor teaching in some universities at home from end of 1930s to end of 1970s last century. In his original articles published in 1930s and 1940s, Yan Zonglin discusses the culture with the people oriented view. He regards the Middle Age as a ＂transferring period of European culture＂ and the Renaissance changes qualitatively from culture of the 13th century. He thinks that the＂mechanical culture＂ in modern Europe results in ＂value inversion, the person enslaved by things and mind enslaved by entity.＂ In his doctorial dissertation in French, he studies deeply the issue of the Eastern learning spreading westward. All of these shows prominently his views on cultural history with unique characteristics and his foresight and sagacity as a master of history. Yan Zonglin ,as a faithful, learned and accomplished scholar loving his country and being modest and amiable, is a master of history to which he should belong.
