《极乐的心境》是英国当代女剧作家卡里尔.丘吉尔商业成就最高的作品,也是争议颇多的一部戏。本文借用福柯关于历史叙事既＂断裂＂又＂连续＂的观点重新解读该剧。通过分析剧中＂双幕对位结构＂呈现的＂断裂＂和多重序列呈现的＂连续＂,说明该剧在提醒人们,自由本身具有压迫性和迷失性,失去标准的新世界在看似进步的外表下隐藏着动荡的危机,并非将世界颠倒过来,人们就能获得＂极乐的心境＂,而对于所谓＂公序良俗＂的改变,需要个人层面与社会层面的变革相结合。

Among the plays by Caryl Churchill, Cloud Nine is the most commercially successful and thematically controversial one. This paper intends to reinterpret the play in light of Foucault’s discussion about ＂rupture＂ and ＂succession＂ in historical narration. ＂Rupture＂ produced by the two-act contrapuntal structure and ＂succession＂ displayed by the relations among multi-series in the play remind people of the crisis beneath the progressive appearance of a world without principles. Given that freedom itself can be oppressive and disorientated, turning the world upside down does not mean the reach of ＂cloud nine＂. To effect any change in the established order, the individual transformation and social reform are both required.
