目前对汉语第三声调自主音段的分析成为争端：是把音段作为单位还是声调丛处理。Yip（1989）认为作为单位处理更好，并引例说明曲折调作为单位扩展，同时解释了曲折调有从左至右，从右至左扩展的边缘效应。然而，Chan（1991）对比两种语言，在分析的基础上指出：扩展既可从调根层又可从调终端层发生。Yip表明曲折调是底层单位，Chan声称平调才是底层调，平调的组合派生出曲折调，因此这一课题还需进一步研究。

The current autosegmental analyses of Mandarin third tone sandhi differ concerning the treatment of segments as units or clusters. Yip （1989） found that units should be preferred, and demonstrated that contour tones spread as units. He explained tone sandhi by using edging effects where the tones spread from left to right and from right to left. Chan（1991）, on the other hand, contrasted two languages to show that spreading could be either from the tonal root tier or the terminal tonal tier. While Yip demonstrated contour tones to be the underlying units, Chan claimed level tones to be the underlying, de- riving contour tones from combinations of level tones. Further research must be made in order to allow us to choose the preferred phonological approach to Mandarin tone sandi.
